RARE DOCUMENTED FRENCH NAPOLEONIC 1ST EMPIRE OFFICER CHAPEAU HAT:
In good original condition showing expected wear and a couple of period repairs on the backside. 18 inch wide by 18 ¼ inch high. Complete with its original leather sweatband and somewhat worn silk liner. No markings. Original brass button with gilt finish from the second regiment of line infantry. Tri-color leather cockade and four strands bullion with faded gilt. Comes with seven original documents related to Lieutenant Petit of the second line infantry regiment. The paperwork is dated from 1812-1820. The officer Petit received the Legion of Honor medal in July 1813 after having participated in the Russia campaign (came back from Russia with frozen ears but survived the Napoleonic Wars). A rare and rarely offered Napoleonic chapeau with provenance!
